Bitcoin rose 5.7% to about $80,484 and Zcash gained 11.7% to about $1,318 on Thursday, as crypto markets rebounded after Democrats won both chambers of Congress, according to CoinDesk’s market report.
The rebound puts crypto prices alongside a wider market recovery, while the election leaves the path for U.S. crypto legislation less certain.
Bitcoin had briefly fallen toward $75,700 early Wednesday as election results came in, then recovered. CoinDesk cited Jeff Mei, chief operating officer at crypto exchange BTSE, who said the market was moving with stocks amid hopes the Iran conflict and high oil prices would ease. Brent crude fell more than 8% Wednesday, U.S. stocks rallied and the dollar weakened.
What helped Bitcoin recover above $80,000?
The price rebound followed the initial election-driven selloff, but CoinDesk’s report points to broader market moves as part of the recovery. The S&P 500 gained 1.6% on Wednesday as investors reacted to the election and falling oil prices. Mei’s explanation links the market move to expectations about the conflict and energy costs; it does not establish that election results alone drove Bitcoin’s rise.
The gains extended across major tokens: Ether rose 8% to about $2,425, Solana gained 5.9% to $96, and XRP added 4.7% to $1.31, CoinDesk reported, citing CoinGecko data. Zcash’s 11.7% rise outpaced those moves, with about $1.2 billion traded over the preceding 24 hours. The figures describe a market snapshot during Asian morning hours, rather than a settled daily close.
What is behind Zcash’s outsized move?
Zcash’s next network upgrade, NU7, was expected around Friday, according to CoinDesk. The upgrade is set to shorten the target interval between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Because blocks contain batches of transactions, shorter intervals could allow services that wait for confirmations to credit deposits sooner.
CoinDesk’s example is an exchange that requires three confirmations: if it keeps that threshold unchanged, the expected wait would fall from nearly four minutes to about 75 seconds. That is a timing estimate based on the planned block interval, not a guarantee about every exchange’s deposit policy or processing time. Zcash supports encrypted payments that can conceal the sender, recipient and amount.
How could the election affect crypto policy?
The Zcash community’s midterm election memo says Democrats have won control of the House and Senate, while some races and the final size of the majorities remain unresolved. The memo assesses that broader crypto market-structure legislation will face tougher negotiations and that financial privacy and illicit finance are likely to receive more scrutiny. Those are the community’s policy expectations, not enacted changes.
Mei separately told CoinDesk that the CLARITY Act in its current form was unlikely to pass. The incoming majorities take office Jan. 3, according to CoinDesk, leaving the legislative outcome open for now. The price rebound and Zcash’s pending upgrade are immediate market developments; the regulatory implications remain prospective.
